

Drive deep enough into the heart of my home state, Oregon, and you’ll stumble upon a natural marvel known as the Painted Hills. I’ve yet to see them in person, but when I do, it’s unlikely they’ll resemble this photo—their colorful mineral layers are ever-changing in response to light and moisture levels.
